Default Stall: Custom spec'd or Off the Shelf

hey folks,

If I had a 4000 stall bought 'off the shelf' would it behave different or put any extra strain/heat on my engine/driveline over a 'custom spec'd' stall converter

cheers

I can only speak for TH350/ Th400 converters at this time, but in general you get what you paid for. I quality converter should be more efficient even comparing to a higher stall speed and therefor your trans temp should run at a lower temp. That's my experience anyway. That said I have ran off the shelf converters that worked great for a street/strip car although I may be leaving some ET on the table.

But for optimum performance you want want a converter set up to match your complete package, especially the operating range that the cam provides.

An external trans cooler is good insurance regardless.

There really isn't much difference between a custom converter and an off the shelf converter. I believe a custom spec'd converter will be closer to the advertised stall speed for your specific combo. But that custom converter could already technically be built and sitting on the guys shelf so where does the madness really end?

Had a vigilante 3200 stall for 3 years. Drove great. Then stepped up to a circle D 5c..4000 stall. It drove just as good as a 3200 but pulled harder top end.

Circle D hands down..

Always a custom built converter is the best way to go.I do have shelf units and I custom build converters as well. Give me a call at the shop and I will be more than happy to spec you one.1-386-736-5816

I actually do have a converter (4000) which I bought off the shelf, it flashes well at the track and good for 1.7 60's in an Aussie Holden Commodore!
I had just read that a custom would overall be better and I could have issues and do damage with the shelf units - Probably shouldn't believe everything I read hey!

thanks guys

Munz, Shelf converters will generally fit your combo close but not perfect however they can fit perfect as well. I would think with a 4000 your 60 would be better.

replaced my OEM 1800 convertor wth an 'off the shelf' TCI 2800 from Summit. It did flash to 2800 and felt a little(but not much) stronger on the street, was 'loose' in city driving. Was a little disappointed overall. Probably gained about a tenth in the 60.
Had to replace the tranny(forward sprag blew and eventually lost 4th gear clutching neither of which was the result of running the 'off the shelf' TCI) and since the tranny was coming out,put in a Yank SS3600. It does flash to 3600,feels much stronger on the street,AND is tight in city driving.
