Default 4l60e fluid

i just read the majority of your transmission sticky and have a quick question.

i purchased a lightly used SS3600 and FLT level 4. i put 1 quart in the converter and bolted it all up. the trans had fluid in it, but no idea how much due fluid loss during transportation.

my question it, how do i go about checking the fluid/starting the car? i read it is a serious issue if trans fluid is to low or to high, so now im nervous. i also have a lokar dipstick if that makes a difference while checking fluid.

thanks,
dan

Personally, I would not keep the old fluid in there. Empty it. Problem solved.

But besides that you always loose a lot more when pulling the tranny out and swapping convertors than just a fluid change. However, emptying it like you would during a fluid change gives you a starting point.

i bought the trans from a friend and it only has a few thousand miles on it, so i was planning on leaving the fluid.

will it hurt the transmission to just idle so i can check the fluid and add? or does it only hurt to drive the car if it is to low or to much?

when you first start the car and get it on even ground, hold the brakes and go through all the gears then put it back into park and let it warm up and check. youll be ok if you go for a short drive, just check it when you come back and it should be full warmed up at that point.

With the engine and trans cold, check the dipstick. A level about 1 inch above "Hot" will get in the ball park. Even running 2 quarts low under light load is no big deal.

Emptying the existing fluid won't tell you much. The trans and converter will hold about 12 quarts. Empyting the pan will only drain about 5 quarts; no way to tell how how more is in the trans.
