Default Question on 4L60E differences

In the process of doing a LS swap in my 89 Mustang. I picked up a 5.3L and 4L60E out of a 2001 Chevy 1/2 ton. I've looked around and honestly pretty confused on the differences in the different 4L60E transmissions. A lot of conflicting info out there.

Basically I just need to know if there is anything I need to change on the transmission to run it in my Fox Body. Does it need the tail shaft housing changed or not? I didn't get a yoke with the transmission when I bought it, so I will be buying one regardless. Any help in clearing this up would be appreciated.

Here is the one I bought:

All '98 through '06 (and maybe some/all '07) are basically the same - certainly same electrically, size etc. However, you cannot change between 2wd and 4wd without rebuilding the trans. There are several different tailshaft housings, but those are easy to swap.
The trans in your picture will work perfectly with any LS1/LS2 engine. (Probably LS3 too - just not sure if the LS3 PCM/TCM will support it.)
Your tailshaft is designed to mount on a crossmember which is probably what you want.
So, looks very good.

What driveshaft will you be using with the 4L60e? I've read several threads but seemed to have missed it.

Thats a good question lol. I know more once I start. Some people say you can use the factory mustang driveshaft and just change the yoke. Others swear it cant be done. So we'll see.

I had a custom built by a local driveshaft specialty shop - they are very common am mostly service trucks. An extra heavy duty 3" shaft with 1330 slip yoke and u-joint were only $250 with balancing; made to the exact length I requested.

@ mrvedit when you say different tailshaft housings if I'm doing a full motor and tranny swap into an 85 c10 is it necessary to swap the housings or what's the purpose of swapping or how do I know which one I need?

The one in the first picture would be for a crossmember that goes underneath the rear of the trans. That is probably what you want for a C10.
I don't have any experience here, but suspect there are other mounting methods that then use a different tailshaft housing.
