converter issue
hi, setting converter up, by pulling it all way down until it hits trans oil pump, i needed like 5 washers (3/8 thickness) to reach desired 1/8-3/16 clearance or gap converter to flexplate, my concent here, bolts will be longer, would that be an issue?
That is a big gap.
Are you sure the pilot (nose) of the converter is seating into the crankshaft?
If the gap is too big, it won't seat correctly in the crank and at minimum cause vibration and potentially crack the flexplate.
You can get 16mm bolts from specialty stores or 20mm bolts from your local hardware store. (Good ones are 8.8 or 9.8 hardness.) If 20mm is too long, put a washer underneath the bolt head too. My hardware store carries extra thick hardened metric washers; that might help you too.
If you have a caliper, measure the washers so you have equal (stack) height. This will both reduce twist and give better balance.
If you have to use more than two washers, wrap masking tape around the outside so that you can install them as one thick one.
This is about the biggest gap I have read about.
Perhaps one of the converter sponsors has corrections to my comments, suggestions or warnings.
