Default Torque Converter Recommendations!

Hi guys,
So I bought a 1999 Trans Am the other day. It has 114,xxx miles on it. It dies when I let it warm up and I need to give it gas to be able to run. I am taking a wild guess that the converter is too small. It has a 228/228 .538 .538 114LSA with a port matched set of 243 heads and Lingenfelter intake. It has been dyno tuned multiple times from what the original owner told me. It has a Moser 3.55 rear in it running 275/35-18 tires on it right now. What torque converter would you get if you had this as a weekend car. Basically street/strip car. Thank you guys so much for your input.

I'd recommend a stall speed of 3400-4000, I'm not an expert but I'm not sure the converter is your problem necessarily. Could be the tune, find out what idle speed it's set to. Also check MAF and/or electrical issues.

I agree, a weekend car with a 228 cam - 3500-4000 range. Depending on how aggressive you want to get. A nice billet single disk will work great.

3500-4000 sounds pretty high. I am no expert in torque converters, but wouldn't 3500 stall mean I would have to ride 3500 rpm until my torque converter is in 1:1 from the engine to transmission? Thanks for the input and I am sure it may be the tune. I'd love to dyno it, but that will be $400 and a PCM tune is $250. Maybe I will wait until I am ready to put the car on the street first.

no, thats just the speed itll flash to. you can drive normal with rpms around 2k and it locks up at a given speed.

With that size cam a 3600 would be great. But a 3800 would be even better.

I've got a converter that will flash 4500. Driving on the street it's 2500-3000 normal driving. Shifts don't go below 48-5000. With 3:23 gear. Many buddies have Circle d converters and love them. Give them a call.
Mine is a PTC
Frost mail tune

My 4000 drives at about 22-2400 cruising around...pulls great at 3500 with my cam. Wot is where it really shines. And a mail order tune is 150$ threw frost.
With a 3.55/228 I run a 3600 without a doubt...don't puss out....are you still on the stock stall then?

Go with a 3800. A 4000 would also work beast with that size cam.

I had a SS3600 with a slightly bigger cam and loved it on the street, my trans took a **** so I took the opportunity to up it to a 4000 stall. Hopefully I can get this trans rebuilt soon so I can get it all back together.
