1997 TransAm Shifter
My wife was forced to have my 1997 TransAm towed only three days after I got it because the automatic shifter was stuck in park (I was out of town). It wasn't the solenoid or cable, and it wasn't due to being parked on a hill. Instead, the plastic rod that inserts into the shifter **** was broken. The mechanic was unable to find a Firebird replacement shifter and had to use a Camaro shifter. Because the button on the TransAm shifter moves HORIZONTALLY, the plastic rod had bent over time and eventually broke (the button on the Camaro shifter is on top and pushes straight down VERTICALLY on the rod). I don't like the Camaro shifter as much, but I'm afraid that even if I can find a Firebird/ TransAm shifter, it might break again too soon. Before I settle for the Camaro shifter and spend the money for a leather **** to replace the current plastic ****, I'm curious to know:
1) are the horizontal 4th gen TransAm shifters really that hard to find? if so then it may be because they're all broken? (which leads me to my next question)
2) Is the same thing going to happen sooner or later if I find another TransAm shifter?
Thanks for any and all insights and comments!
