how far will a stock 4l60e go
exactly what the title says. i want to so a cam swap to the tsp 233/239 cam for now then heads and intake later. but for now only the cam along with the mods in my sig. so basically i have a 3600 stall and a shift kit will it live for a while. it has 60,000 miles on it and the trans would be the next thing i do but im afraid of it going on me before even though it would only be used as a core anyways and i have another car to drive as my dd as well..
again can i drive it for a little while without worrying too much?

4L60s seem to be a crap shoot, some last some dont. My buddies stock one went 100k miles and 25k of it was behind a heads/cam/nitrous LS1 running 7.05s in the 1/8th mile, others arent so lucky...

Well its a machine, it can go at anytime honestly. My trans went at 18k. Had one rebuild knock on wood and is still going strong with 91k street miles and lots of track passes. Made 11 passes two Sundays ago. Its all about maintenance, how its tuned and how you drive it and keeping temps down. Believe it or not but one of the biggest stresses on a auto trans is wot kick downs from 4th gear. With 60k you should be fine just don't beat the hell out of it on the street.

I had 100k on mine running fine, then as soon as I put a converter in I went thru 2 stockers, so I had one built and haven't had an issue since. Put a ALOT of low 11 sec passes and 1.4 60fts on it too.

My car is right under 150k right now. My factory a4 has seen headers since around 80k, 3.73s since about 85k and a Yank 3500 since around 90k, so nearly 60k miles under the stress of being daily driven with a stall. Of course I have installed a cooler, but I am by no means easy on my car or it's components. I've ran it through the gears "manually" I don't know how many times and truly get on it on a daily basis. Also, being in NEPA, drastic elevation changes and the hills/mountains that come with them are abundant.
When cold it takes a little time to finally initiate overdrive and it has a tendency to pop out of lock up recently, but the shifts are still flawless, there is no slippage or hesitation or anything of that nature. Considering it has spent about 60k miles stalled, I'd expect something to have happened by now.
I haven't looked into things since it hasn't posed any problems so I am not sure if it's the beginning of something worse or something that can be fixed pretty simply. I've never had the car tuned so that could be an issue. It just seems to pop out of lock up from time to time.
That said, I'm impressed with the beating this thing has taken and how well it still performs under the circumstances. The 4L60e is no TH400 by any means, but it's still going strong. As the fellows have said though, it's a crap shoot. Some luck out and some meet their fate rather quickly.
At least if it fails you can throw another in for about $250!

I've been stalled and shift-kitted for almost 80k on mine and it is still working great. Daily driven and numerous track passes. I credit the "modified" Transgo kit and cooler for the superb performance of my tranny over the years.
