Street car Stall Speed opinions needed!
Hes running a Turbo 350 3speed and not a 4l60e 4speed lock up. Turbo 350 gears are 2.52-1 low gear,,,1.52-1 2nd ,,,and 1-1 3rd. 4L60e is 3.06-1 low gear, 1.63-1 2nd,,,1.0 -1 3rd and .70-1 4th with lock-up convertor.
For racing or some low speed cruising the 350 is fine but you get out on the freeway and want to run 70 mph in that thing with a 4-4200 stall its going to be screaming and it will burn a pile of fuel. The 4l60e can have a 4400 in it and when she locks up its the same as a stock convertor until you mash the gas and you can drive it anywhere.
The OP stated he wanted decent driveability in his opening post.

I've driven mine the equivalent of a TH-350......4l60e in 3rd with no lockup. Interstate with a 3.73 gear was brutal. Don't know how anyone could do it.
That's the way we all used to do it back in the day. LOL My first hotrod with overdrive was the greatest thing EVER.
It depends on what your able to cope with and how much highway or long distance commutes etc etc. If you just drive it back and forth short distances around town or meets or race the car the 3800 is fine but beware your gonna know its there. If its your DD then no ==your going to hate life driving it around. Depends on what your after. Like they said == back in the day that was all you had but gas didnt cost 3.50+ a gallon plus either etc etc.
I had a 69 Camaro with a 3500 stall on a built small block on 4.11 gears and on the freeway it was not pleasant at all and was a heavy drinker of fuel. In town it wasnt bad but you and everyone around it knew it was in there too. The technology of the auto 4speeds with the lock up convertor is like a 5 speed trans vs the 3speed Turbo 350 or 400.
I have a CircleD 1e in my car and you know its there but once the thing locks up its like stock. Technology for the win and its economical too.
