Default TC question

I am wanting to put a large cam in my old 68, and will really need a large stall. however my trans is still stock. If I go ahead with the 3600TC, and a good cooler. Will it(TC) be trashed "when" my transmission goes out?

I really cant afford the cam, TC, and a built trans all at one time.

or would it possibly make more of a "seat of the pants difference" to do a big converter and built tranny and then the cam down the road? Already have a small cam now.
