4l60e lost 3rd and 4th. I was driving home from the movies today when on the high way i lost 3-4. I cannot shift past 2nd no matter what. So whats happening? Ive never rebuilt a transmission before but m willing to try. Apparantly its quite commonon on 4l60es? Is this something i should just take to a shop, or haul the ol girl off and perform a compleate rebuild. Any help would be great, thanks.

In short, take it to a shop. The special tools are costly, there is a lot to learn and less than 50% of 1st time rebuilders get it right the first time.
Also, a lost 3/4 can be due to gradual wear over many miles, or a leak in the 3/4 clutch circuit that takes a keen eye and experience to locate and fix.

Thanks for the advice. I was afraid of that. Anyone have ballparks on shop prices? If a rebuild is in order is a shift kit worth it? It is a higher mileadge car, im geussing the tranny is old and tired, and just finally gave out like it did.
