4l80e TCC Dragging
Help!
New LS conversion in 65 Chevelle. All is well but it stalls in drive and reverse, worse in reverse. After two weeks of changing a gazillion tables in the box with HPT, I'm convinced it's the Torque Converter Clutch.
Changed valve bodies, very little change. Drive may be a little better, reverse is the same. It seems much worse when it's hot.
Anyway, has anyone tried the Sonnax Line-to-Lube Pressure Regulator Valve? Their PN is 34200-14k.
I'd really like to enjoy this thing before it snows!

900. In reverse it will surge from 800 down to 300 or so and finally just give up. It will idle fine in neutral and park. And, when it's not heat soaked it will idle in drive. I haven't checked pressures. The converter is supposed to be 3,000 stall but acts tight. Don't know if that's because of the stall or the TCC. When I have it in reverse, I let my foot off the brake and it's not unlike letting a clutch pedal out?? I has the Transgo HD2.....installed with Jake's do's and don'ts.

I might add>the motor is a fresh .060 over 6.0 with a mild cam. And, I am not experienced with HPT, only been mess'n with it for a couple years. But, I don't think there is a table I haven't changed and went back to where I was. The result is always the same......it stalls.

This is somewhat common issue we used to see with 4L80Es.
There are several things that affect it but I am not willing to discuss it online. Call me at the shop and I'll try to help you with a method that may fix it without getting too deep.

The problem is gone! Idles fine with the Sonnax valve installed. No amount of tuning would solve my problem. It took several days, and input from others, to figure out it was the TCC staying partially engaged, and this valve solved the problem. It may not help everyone, but it made my life a lot more pleasant. Hope this helps others with the same problem. Now, all I need is a converter that is as loose as this one is supposed to be!

I'm surprised the aftermarket PR valve fixed it. It's going the right direction but I'm surprised it was enough to make a big difference. There are also a couple of other things we've learned to help.

Once in gear how would it run going down the road? Can u go to rpm limit? My jeep dies on idle. I feel a bit of on and off slipping in at low rpm and once it passes stall speed doesn't let the motor rev up too much. But in park and neutral it idles and revs like a dream.
In trying to trace my problem to see if it's a trans or motor issue

Boy that was frustrating chasing down what i thaught was a engine idle/iac tuning issue.
Chris, when you say spacing, do you mean too close to pump or away?
Thanks

I know this is a semi old thread but, i recently had the "dragging" issue as well. The sonnax valve woked for me also, i haven't been able to duplicate the problem, its been fine.

Glad the valve fixed it, we have had great success on the valve.

I kinda figured thats what you meant,it reduces return flow?
Further driving in traffic and hot conditions has still been good so far. After a hot day at the the track will be the final test, boy was it grabbin and chattering that day!

Sorry to hijack thread but having the exact same issue - been fighting tuning at stop lights and have been throwing it in neutral at a light to keep from hearing the motor drag so badly.
Seems to drive fine around town
Is .125 converter spacing ok? I was told by my converter manufacturer to use a few shims to keep converter closer to pump which, reading in this thread, may be the issue
