Default Auto shifter help

I'm all new to auto shifters, I haven't been in the game long at all. But I'm currently confused when it comes to auto shifters. I see ratchet shifters have a lever in front of them and also gate shifters have that level in front of them. Why do both style shifters have that level in front of them? Also the reverse lockout little lever in the very front of them. When do you have to use that lever? Hoping someone can clear this up for me. Thanks.

It's just a lockout to ever keep you from accidental going into park or reverse. Once the shifter has made it to neutral, you'll have to grab the lever and pull it to allow it to slide it into R/P.

you have to pull the little red lever once in nuetral to go into reverse or park. Okay I got that, so what is the big lever for then? When do you have to use it?

There's only two. The shifter lever and the lock out lever.

Like on the b & m pro stick shifter there's a lever in front of the shifter handle. Just didn't know what the use of that was for.

That lever in front of the shifter handle is the lockout lever.
