slipping trans 1998 trans am
Last week my trans started slipping between gears and 4th seems like its completely gone untill about 5k rpm.
I was planning on having the trans rebuilt sometime next month but now im not sure whats happening..
Yesterday I left my lights on killed my battery, once i got the car started it shifted fine and every thing was working for about 5 to 6 miles then started acting up again?? What could cause this? Also fluid is full clean bright red and doesn't smell burnt.

It sounds like your rebuild is not going to wait until next month. The only way to confirm what is needed is to perform a few tests. Have you checked the PCM for codes? It would help if you could hook up a trans pressure gauge to the side of the trans and report the pressure readings. You will need to drop the pan to see if there is any clutch material in the bottom of the pan.
Often transmissions that have an internal leak or worn clutches will work when they are cold because the fluid is thicker. But once it heats up the fluid thins out and the problem quickly shows back up. I would have to agree that its time for a rebuild.
