Default Help an Aussie choose a converter!

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a converter for my budget project car.

Car is an 80's Volvo with an LS2/4L80e combo. Has an eBay GT45 turbo and a Ford 8.8" rear end, with 3.73:1 gears which I will change if need be. Running 26" tyres. Car is mostly for street duties so street manners matters. Has a stage2 tick performance turbo cam as well (230's?) and 241 heads.

Price is important. The aussie dollar is shitful at the moment (about 62c to the US$1) so I'd like to keep it under $1000AU if that's possible.

Will also need to get a flex plate to suit.

Throw some recommendations at me!

Thanks

Thanks for that. They seem to be very similar in price to the Circle-D ones. Looks like the going rate for something decent will be around US$1000-1200.

Are there any other options that are cheaper that don't sacrifice too much? If not, I guess I'll just need to bite the bullet and spend the money.

Hate to say it but you get what you pay for. A converter is no place to cheap out on.
Say you get a budget converter and over power it or something and it takes a dump.

Boom there goes your transmission as well.

No one here has ever posted that they bought a quality converter and didn't think it was worthwhile.
However, lots of posts of cheap converters ruining their transmission; and especially regrets about buying a cheap one after they upgrade to a good one and then notice the difference.

Yeah, that's fair enough and I completely understand that. What I was hoping was that there was a cheaper option that might have some sacrifices (like no WOT lockup, which I don't see the need for anyway) that might save me some coin. Looks like the cost of the converter is going to be about 1/3 of the total project cost.

Thanks. I've been emailing Brian at Circle-D and it looks like that's the way I'll be going. More than I wanted to spend but you've gotta pay to play it would appear

How much power you think you're running? The Yank SS series is up to 650rwhp.

I have an SS 4000 rated stall and I've really liked it. Also has a 3-year warranty. I don't know how good they are vs. say Circle-D. I would have to ask the opinion of someone who has ran both.
