trans or torque converter
Ive been chasing a vibration and clunking sound
It shifts good with no issues from 1st to 2nd
then a very very hard shift with a clunk in the rear from 2nd to 3rd
and a grinding/vibration in overdrive at low RPM normally around 30 miles and hour. A light push on the gas and the vibration goes away as the converter unlocks or shifting down in to 3rd.I just had the rear end cover off and it already had Royal Purple gear oil,It has 3.42 gears that look new with no shavings in the oil,I added new Royal Purple oil to spec. The trans mount, motor mounts and the ujoints are good The dealer and I both checked it .The trans never slips and has no problem braking the tires loose just driving it in drive. There are no shavings in the trans oil.
As far as i know the motor is the stock LS1. everything under the rear is new,I recently replaced all the rear suspension with Founders parts and,Summit racing sway bar bushings and ends and a UMi torque arm with relocation kit with no change It already had Founders LCA's.and pan hard bar.I just replaced the older ones
I gave up and took it to my local dealership they said it was all the sun shell going bad and the trans needs rebuilt.I would not think twice about driving it across the country as is. but it has been this way for the last year ive had it and 4 years my son had it.I was looking at selling the car but not before I fix this issue
The dealer said it also had a stall converter. My question is does this sound like the trans or the converter. They have not removed the trans

Compare the vibration level at the same RPM, e.g. 2500, in 3rd and 4th gear. If there is vibration in 3rd, but it goes away in 4th, then indeed the sunshell could be at fault. (The sunshell does not turn in 2nd and 4th).
The way I read your post, the vibration goes away as you shift down into 3rd; that almost eliminates the sunshell.
The vast majority of vibration/clunking/noise issue are due to U-joints, unbalanced drive shafts, often combined with non-stock Urethane bushings which then greatly magnify (otherwise) minor vibrations.
If the vibration started after you replaced a bunch of parts, that is where you should look for the problem.
Perhaps the more experienced mechanics here will have other suggestions. (I don't even own a Gen-4.)
I noted the torque converter was locking up as low as 1000rpm
It will lock up in 3rd and in drive
If I hold steady on the gas and tap the brake the vibration stopped immediately
Still doesn't solve the clunk in the rear end.also it has not had any codes on my scanner
