What size trans cooler are you guys running? I'm going to be running a 3-3200 stall in my 64 nova. 30k unit is pretty big. Not sure how that would affect my motor cooling. Plus I will be adding AC in the future. So condenser room is being considered too.

 

Also plate or fin style?

With AN fittings and braided lines

I have a yank ss3600 and run my car VERY hard and have yet to see trans temps above 160 degrees and that's in this hot humid Minnesota heat

 

I was looking at the next one up but the size kind of worried me. Like hearing the one you have does fine. It wouldnt take up as much room.

 

I have a tru-cool H7B which is the same thing as the B&M 70274 with -6 AN lines, and it works awesome mounted on my radiator.

 

Looks like another one to look at. So -6 AN lines are the size to use? Not sure if I will try and modify the lines that came with the trans or not.

 

You can use -6 or even -8 An if you wanted to. If you want to use the stock lines, you should look into the Hayden 679 cooler.

 

I run the hayden 679 and it works perfectly.. I don't have any fans on it and after running a 2015 5.0 Mustang about 7 or 8 times back to back 10-100 mph runs I think I finally hit 180 lol.. it does a damn good job.. stop and go traffic on a 95 degree day I'm lucky to hit 160.. it's mounted in front of the condenser at the same angle with a 1 inch gap in between.. it will take some brackets to mount it that way though. That's with an ss4000 by the way..

 

The 1 1/2" thick coolers may cause a problem. My radiator will be in this week but I'm thinking 3/4" is the only way I can go. I'll have to see what the biggest one I can get is. My dang hood latch bracket is in the center of the radiator opening. But when I put AC on next spring I won't have room for my condenser then. I guess I'll figure that one out when the time comes.

 

Another vote here for the Hayden 679. I made custom brackets and kept it about 3/4 in away from my radiator/condenser. Plenty of flow, and with my stalled auto, I've never seen temps get over 172. That's 3 hour highway trips, in town miles, or multiple hot lapped dragstrip passes. No dedicated fan either.

 

Would running 2 smaller coolers hurt anything? Not sure if there would be any pressure drop issues. I could mount them on both sides of my hood latch and would take care of my future AC condenser space.

 

Are you running a cooler that's built into the radiator as well?

I wouldn't worry too much about airflow through these. Plenty of air moves across them and i haven't seen any issues with my coolant temps by running my large single.

 

It's going to run through my radiator first then to the external cooler. I'm just limited on room.

Running one through the radiator, then two small ones should get the job done. I wouldn't worry about the flow restriction so long as the radiator and both coolers are new and clean.

 

I would bypass the cooler in the radiator all together.

I'm going to still run it through my radiator. Most manufactures recommend to do so and it helps in cold weather with getting it warm. my radiator came in yesterday. It has some mounting depth adjustability to it that I wasn't aware of. So once I get my motor in place I can adjust it to get as much clearance as possible. I might add this is a damn nice radiator too!

Unless you drive it in the winter bypass the radiator and go straight through the cooler.. most people bypass it due to seasonal driving.. your temp will stay much cooler

I do drive it during the winter time on nicer days. I may look into running it straight to the external cooler only. It'll be a pain to swap it back around every spring and winter. I'll figure something out I guess.
