4L60E - Rebuild or Replace?
Hi everyone!
I have a 1995 Z28 with a 4L60E in it, and have been having way too many issues with it. Started out with every once in a while when going from cruising rpm to full throttle until redline would cause check engine light to pop on for about 20 seconds before going away. Issue is, at that point it refused to downshift without manually shifting it into low gear. This happened maybe every other week for two or three months, and I could never really plan for it. Once the check engine light went off the problem persisted but my laptop said there were no transmission codes. I got it to a shop and they said the transmission was fine, though the problem never really went away.
About a week ago the transmission just completely decided to mess up, and under cautious driving (it was raining) it refused to pass second gear. What I ended up finding was that Low 1 and Low 2 worked just fine, but both drive and overdrive would basically be in neutral, and pressing the gas would rev it until it hit a point that matched the wheel speed. Wasn't ideal because I ended up having to drive it there and back going about 35 on the highway. For whatever reason (maybe unrelated, lots of cooling issues too) it also ended up overheating pretty bad and spewed coolant out the reservoir, maybe because of the higher rpm driving. I haven't driven it since then and haven't really had much time to look at it, but I plan on bleeding the coolant system again, then bring it to a shop to check out the transmission.
Has anyone here had any similar issues before? Would it be better to have a shop rebuild it or just replace it all together? I've rebuild the top end of my engine when the head gasket blew but I would rather leave the transmission to someone who knows what they're doing, heard plenty of horror stories and don't have the 3 months of waiting around like I did back then.
Thanks for any insight or tips on what to do here, I've never had to deal with transmission troubles before so I'm kind of lost!

The '95 4L60E is a unique year and you would need to replace it with another '95; no other years will work. However they might be easy to find on CL because members here frequently ask about about using them with LS engines which I then strongly discourage.
If you cannot find another one, you will need to get it rebuilt.
