Default 4l80 OD sprag

Can the OD sprag/roller be installed backward? I rebuilt one and have slippage in reverse amd OD gears. Holds in manual low. Also holds fine in 4th. The OD sprag waa blown up.in the unit originally. So i bought a "kit" which included all new components, drum, rollers, planetray. I didnt check it very well. I "ASSumed" it would.be correct. So much for that. It obviously has an issue. I can hear a "whirling" noise in reverse and OD positions. Nojse goes away in 4th and manual low.

The early ones cannot be installed upside down, Don't know if the late ones can or not.....The Overruns are "On" in D3, Try D3 & get back to us.

If you had a Small Late Style.....You should have converted to the Large Early Style.

Its a 05 model so ita the late one that is bluish in color. I know thebearly ones had the big plastic lip so it couldnt go in wrong, that is why i made the assumtion that this one was correct. I didnt try d3 but did try d1. I also have a scan tool that can command gears. I can command 4th gear while on the lift amd there is no slippage amd the strange noise is not present.

It was the OD sprag. Pulled it apart and sure enough it would spin both directions. Put another one in it and all is good

Glad you got it fixed, BTW....You cannot install the late roller clutch upside down, It has little tabs that prevent you from doing so. I took some pics though It's to late for you....

Was the Roller Clutch damaged? I would hate for you to put it together & it not hold under torque.

I noticed the tabs once i got to looking at it. Even tried to flip it over. It wont go. Im not sure whay the deal was. I put the new roller in this moring and had the trans back in before lunch. Drove it all afternoon and all is good. Guess it is just defective, maybe the rollers are too small. I sent it back as defect
