Default 2002 Sonoma 4X4 4L60e

Hi Everyone. This is my first post so please let me know if you need more info.

I have a 2002 Sonoma 4X4 with a 4.3 and the transmission is on it's way out. I have been told that the only transmission that I can swap out will be from a 2002 (s10, Sonoma, Blazer, Jimmy). I find this hard to believe as the 4L60e was a very common transmission.

Can anyone tell me why I would be restricted to a 2002? Is it a control issue for the PCM? Different Pinouts on wiring connections? I know between the RWD and 4WD the tailpiece is different to connect the transaxle.

Yank the trans out & see what Input Shaft is in the transmission & what the converter codes is, There was some changes around that time with the S/T/M platform. I don't work on this platform enough to keep up. More/different models will fit but I don't want to spout off with wrong information.
