Question 4L80 Swap-need opinions

Hey yall,

I'm new here and new to cars. I bought a 2000 Camero SS earlier this year, and I want to make some upgrades. This is my daily driver, but I do take it to the track occasionally. Eventually, I would like to run the 1/4 in 10s. I'm guessing I'll need at least 500 hp to the wheels to do that. So far, I have only upgraded the brakes, shocks, and rear suspension. My next project is the transmission, and I have decided to go with a 4L80E. I already have the 4L80E cross member and torque arm from BMR. I just need advise on finding a 4L80.

I've been looking for junk yard 4L80s (to rebuild) and already rebuilt 4L80s. I'll consider either option, but I want to go with the more economical option. I've been advised to go with the newer style 4L80s (2004 and newer). Just looking at the newer style, I have found rebuilds for about $1500-1800, and junk yard 4L80s for about $800. I don't see how I could have a junk yard 4L80 rebuilt for less than $1000. It looks like it would be more economical to buy a rebuilt 4L80.

I found a 2005 4L80 that was rebuilt locally. It has a factory stall converter, so that would have to be replaced. I'm thinking this one would be about $2500 after I replace the converter.
I also found some rebuilt 4L80s on monstertransmission.com. They have one rated for about 550hp for $1450. The HD high stall (2800-3200) converter is another $515. Are these good rebuilds?

I'm not rebuilding the 4L60E, and I don't want to wait until it breaks. I'm a "replace it before it breaks" kind of person.

I pay $40 for cores, any year.
$500 average rebuild stock internals with durability upgrades.
I'm sure they would hold 550 hp and could probably sell them for $1450.

I can tell you right now, don't take anyone's word on a rebuild unless they work for a well known rebuilding company.

If you can't rebuild it yourself without an internet forum walking you through the entire thing. Buy a built one from a reputable company. Trust me, you'll save money even if it costs you $3500 initially. (trans and converter)

I found a junkyard that has a 2005 4L80e for $250. I'm going to go get it Monday, if the roads are safe. They said the transmission jumps in and out of gear, so it's perfect for a rebuild!

I got mine for 89 bucks, turned out it was previously rebuilt, and i installed an HD2 shift kit. I recommend the HD2 for any trans you go with. If its a nice unit in good condition most do the HD2 and do NOT rebuild. They seem to have good luck.

Dang! You stole that one. The next cheapest (2004 or newer) 4L80 I have found was listed at $800. That one had about 200,000 miles on it.

I'm taking it to a local transmission guy. I expect him to use the HD2 shift kit. We already talked about that. He just doesn't like Yank converters for some reason.
