Help with powerband

I now have 3.42s and i was hoping someone could help me out. What are good starting points to roll race w/ these gears considering i have an a4. Also whats places i dont want to race out with an a4. Where do a4 pull really hard and lag?

i guessing this should go here rather than the gear section but not sure.

If you get a 3500 stall torque converter, the issue becomes pretty moot. Any time you drop below 4000 rpm, you will feel the car is not pulling hard.

All 4L60-E and 700R4 are great out of the hole (if you can make traction) because of a deep 3.059:1 first gear ratio. The problem with the 60 is that it is based on the 700R4 which was originally designed to be a economy gearbox, not a performance one. The deep first gear allows a lower-stall converter and saves fuel. This translates into a big difference in ratios between first and second. With a stock converter you will feel a flat spot after the 1-2 shift as the engine falls out of its powerband from the huge drop in RPM. The only way to counter this in a 4L60-E is to use a higher-stall torque converter to keep the engine in the power band after the 1-2 shift. It's not an optimal solution, it's the only one since you cannot change the gearing ratios.

take it out and test it to find out where your sweet spots and dead spots are. Just don't let your tranny do any automatic kickdowns to 2nd or you'll be rebuilding your tranny. I have 3.73's and I can get a 2nd gear kickdown up to 65mph by manually pulling the shifter into "2". any higher than that and I'm in a dead spot untill about 90-95.
