tranny help
1. How much power will a stock tranny hold. I am about to do the tr224 and was wondering if I need to worry about the tranny.
2. This car will be a daily driver and I am also going to do a converter. What would be a good converter to do? I do not want it to be sloppy on the street, and I don't see the track that often( maybe once every 3-4 months). I think I would just want a stall that would get me into the cams power band. Is that right? I need help.
its hit or miss with these trannies. i broke mine with a 3400 TCS converter and a stockish 12.90 car after 56,000 miles. on the other hand there are guys going deep into the 11s on stock 4L60Es. if i were you i would install your cam and converter and have fun with the car. just keep a little cash saved up for an eventual rebuild because, especially with a cam, you WILL have enough power to possibly break the trans. i don't think the tranny will last you forever but i dont think its going to break next month either.
as for the converter, the LS1 doesn't make any real power until 3000 rpm even with the stock cam. because of this i would recommend you get a 3200-3500 stall converter with a 2.5 STR. i'd usually recommend a higher stall but you said you weren't interested in frequent trips to the track and you're concerned about driveability. I drive my Vig (3800 true stall) everywhere and the driveability is still very respectable. the 3200 would be the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM in my opinion. below that, you won't really see that much of a performance gain out of it. good luck and happy modding.
