What to replace while transmission is out? I've dropped my engine cradle to do a rebuild on my daily driver 1998 A4 Formula. The transmission wasn't giving me any issues prior to being pulled off. Are there any obvious or good preventative maintenance items I should look at while I have it out and on a table? I was going to replace the tail seal and bushing while I have it out and new oring for when I have to put the tail housing back on. Any other parts that are a good idea or is the transmission one of those things that's better left alone if it isn't giving any issues? I plan on leaving the stock torque convertor on as this is a daily driver and the engine rebuild will be mostly stock with a few bolt-ons. Thanks.
I have a '99 s10 with a 5.3 swap. I rebuilt the transmission but used a tail housing that had 260,000 miles on it. Didn't change the bushing or seal and it doesn't leak. I've sold a few f body tail housings on ebay because I get them for $20 and can get $130 out of one. They have teflon lined bushings that just last. (thats a story, not a suggestion or advice)
The best thing you could do is remove the filter and break it open. Whats inside will tell you what to do.
For what it's worth I did get around to rebuilding that 260k trans in my story and it could have went much longer, looked really good inside, I worked good before removing it too.

I have seen the Teflon bushing and rear Vamac 3 lip seal go 300,000+ miles and still be ok. Some of these seals still have the original grease in them after many thousands of miles. I offer these in all my rebuild kits for 4L60E & 700R4's. They never wear out.
