Default mileage out of stock Trans?

01 Camaro 148k miles

on Highway it slips out of gear it sounds like around 70 MPH. I can let off gas and hit brake and then hit gas again and it will pick back up with acceleration.

My question is how many miles should i get before i need to replace the trans?

Can I change the filter and put in some trans fluid designed to help the tranny?

thanks.

Depends a lot on how the trans was treated during its previous life. Did it tow things? Did it get fluid changes per the owners manual? Was it raced or allowed to run hot?

If I had to put an average number of miles on units that needed rebuild when they cane to me, I’d have to say it’s about 130k miles. That’s the most common that I’ve personally seen. Not exactly 130k but in that area. I’d say if you got over 150k then that’s pretty good. I have seen well taken care of units go over 200k and more but that’s rare. They weren’t towed with and the fluid was changed regularly.

I changed the filter maybe one time in the life of the car since I owned it with 10K miles on it, now 148...I think there was around 70k when changed trans fluid. I haven't raced it or abused the car either. Is it worth dropping the pan and replacing filter, replacing fluid somewhat as to what falls out when pan is dropped or even putting in any of that Transmission fluid stuff you can add that helps trans supposedly?

The replies above seem to be answering a general question of "how long can a 4L60E last", but I don't think that's quite what the OP is asking within his post. It seems that he's asking how much longer his specific unit might last now that it's (perhaps) beginning to exhibit signs of failure. Nobody can answer this question though, if it's weak then you're already on borrowed time.

However, it's also possible that you might be feeling the torque converter (TCC) locking and unlocking at that speed. This could be due to misfires or some other issue that's not actually specific to the transmission itself. But you'd need to do some diagnostics and determine what exactly is happening when you think it's "slipping out of gear".

It needs a rebuild now it sounds like. I would say it is pretty normal and at the end of its life. Hell even my grandmas 4l60e in her suburban went at 175k, and it was NEVER abused.

First, we need to get a little more information about your transmission.

What does the transmission fluid look like?
Is it pink, red, brown or black?
What is the fluid level in the transmission, Full, low, over filled?
What does the transmission fluid smell like? Fresh, normal, slightly burnt, burnt?

If the level is correct, the fluid not discolored and it still smells decent, I would drop the pan change the fluid and do a new filter. This will give you a change to see what the filter and magnet look like. Then in a few thousand miles if all is well, I'd do it again. Dropped pan only gets about half of the old fluid out.

I say that based on the following.

My 91 RS had a 700R4 that went 389,500 miles with no issues and still worked fine when pulled. It's basically very similar to the 4L60e.

My 02 Z28's 4L60e has 244,000 miles on it. It's in great shape, shifts correctly and doesn't slip.

I've used Mobile 1 ATF along with Red Lubegard in both of them. Lubegard is OEM approved. Frequent fluid & filter changes are key and not getting too hot. I like to change filter and fluid ~15,000 to 20,000 miles but I'm a fanatic.

Also had three friends with 250,000+ miles on their 4L60e in their truck/suv with no issues.

Another friend had issues at 104,000 miles but that car was beat hard and didn't get filter & fluid changes like it should have

Hmm, I'm coming up due for an ATF change (currently 35,000 miles). I'll have to look into the Red Lubegard stuff. If GM supports its use there must be something to it because car manufacturers are notorious for aftermarket type stuff voiding warranties.

The 60 in my truck lasted well over 300K miles. Changed filter/fluid twice in it's whole life. Towed with it. Ran big, heavy tires. Tuned it to shift harder, pulled most of the torque management out of it as well. You just never know.

I'm not a fan of additives and avoid them all except for Lubegard. I think it's the real deal when used per institutions. Friend who owned a transmission shop told me about.

My Avalanche is at 280,000 kms , the trans is definitely tired but doesn't slip , just clunks between gears . Think I have too much probably due to worn out clutch packs . But I have probably put another 50k since the clucking started . Sounds your TCC clutch is worn out by the symptoms you described .
