Default Th400 to 4l60e

i have a 67 chevelle that i swapped in a 5.3 with a turbo. Had a th400 manual valve body. I modified my factory harness when I did the install and removed all the electronic transmission plugs and wires from it (kicking myself in the *** for doing this now) and I saved all the connectors.

Anyway, my th400 blew up but I’m not even mad because I regret not going with a OD trans to begin with. So, I want to run an OD transmission now. I don’t know if I should re pin all the 4l60e connectors into the pcm plug and run a built 4l60e or if I should leave the harness be and run a built 700r4 and only have to worry about the TV cable. My intake and TB is a cable operated and the TB has the ball on one end to attach a TV cable (or so I’m assuming).

anyway, I’m looking for opinions about my two options.

Steering away from full manual VB, I want to be able to put it into D and cruise.

Putting a 4l60e behind a turbo 5.3 would be a huge mistake. I'd get a built th400 or a 4l80 if you really need od

What was the cause of the th400 failure?

I think for a turbo setup, since you'll be going through the steps of a swap (driveshaft, crossmember, wiring harness, etc) then I would think a 4l80e would be the better decision for you if you're making some good power.

Probably a bushing failure of some sorts. Sucks because it has 1700 miles on it. Was a “Level III” 800hp th400. My setup made 600rwhp. Around 710+at the crank. This happened under mild acceleration. No trips down the track.

Damn, I'd be ripping that th400 out to see what wasn't assembled properly, fix it and get on with life. Getting kinda tired of looking of the pictures.

To answer your question I'd pin the PCM before using a 700. It's way easier to type shift points into a pcm than it is to grind governor weights and guess at springs, and rig up a tv cable that has the proper geometry.
You might be better off with a 80 pinned to your pcm and the proper tuning conversion done.

yeah, I didn’t realize what was required to get a 700 to work. F that.
