I'd be looking at a 6L80/85, they are compact in size with the dimensions available through google. But it seems that the old school trans are still popular because I guess they are familiar and a known quantity.
The Holley Dominator currently does not control a 6L80/85 so that is (fortunately) not an option. IMHO the 6L80 was designed for heavy SUV and Trucks and its super-low 1st gear makes it unsuitable for use in performance cars.
Don't know about you but a 'super low' 1st gear is handy to load/unload the car from a trailer and for driving around the pits. There are still 5 other gears but as always it's an individual choice.
mrvedit the 60e 1st gear is lower than a 6l80 2nd gear. Plenty of guys launch in 2nd.
Plenty of other guys going 1.3 60 foot in 1st gear with no transbrake.
a 4.03 first gear can make a 350hp car feel like a 450hp car. I'm sure that's part of why GM did it to cars!
Also, your SLR can be the same with a 4.03 first and a really high diff gear (3.15 or 3.23 area) as it would be with a 4l60e and a 3.73 or 3.90. Its not exact, but you can see the trend i'm trying to get at haha.
I totally agree the 6l80 works well as an suv trans...but I don't think it's incapable as a trans for a well powered car.
