Default Transmission Cooler

What are you guys running for transmission coolers and where did you mount it? I’ve got a 99 f-body 4l60 with a 3600 stall converter.

I'v had many different setups over the years. My last setup was the best on my car. Not sure if you have a/c out or not but my last setup was without a/c. I ran a big summit cooler in between the radiator (lt1 radiator) and the SSRA. Perfect setup for my car. The consensus around here is a fin+tube is not as good as a stacked plate but I have found the opposite on my car. I'm a fan of fin+tube. A smaller stacked plate B&M is what most seem to run and is sufficient.

Here is the B&M I am talking about. I'd have to dig around for the part number but I'm sure another member here probably knows. I have ran these on the a/c condenser, on the radiator, on the air damn, and 2 on the air damn. When I ran the one on the air damn like that it was only for track and wouldn't recommend for a street car. 2 coolers didnt seem to help at all, but it did block air going to radiator...not good. This cooler will work best if you can get it on the condenser (if you have a/c) or on radiator (without a/c) Sorry, somehow I dont have pics in my collection with it on the condenser and radiator but I'm sure there's plenty of other pics+info here on this forum.

I'm running a stock 1999-ish to 2003-ish GM truck trans cooler mounted to the passenger side inner fender to cool my 4L60E. It has a thermostatically-controlled seven inch fan mounted to it for better cooling.

Thanks for the info and pics. That low mount would get ripped off where I live with our potholes! LOL

LOL no doubt, that's why I used it for the track but that's all.

You can use any cooler inline with the stock radiator cooler/heater or you can bypass it. Some will say if you drive in a colder climate you should run it inline with the stock cooler because it acts as a heater to get fluid up to temp quicker. I live in New England and did drive the car in winter but only above freezing with nice roads of course. I always preferred to run the coolers by themselves. Its piece of mind for me also because I didnt want the cooler/radiator leaking into each other. Never had any issues. Always warmed up the car 10 min or so before driving. Only issue that time of year was traction

I run a -6an braided line setup similar to what was posted by 98CayenneT/A but with a Tru Cool H7B cooler which is the same as the B&M 70274 just half the price. I have mine mounted on the radiator since I dont have ac and temps hardly get over 160 with my 3800 stall.

I'm using a Derale remote cooler. Fan moves about 500 CFM and comes with barbed or -6an fittings

Damn that is really over priced...

Look into Tru Cool for a cooler and Spal for an electric fan.

It's not that bad. Some of those b&m coolers cost more. I'm gonna mount this in the back of the car

Limited space up front in my car, so oil and trans cooler ended up under the seat. EBAY, 10AN coolers and 7" fans. Under $100 for both.

BTW, my fans are PWMed, have soft start and only come on as much as needed.

Where does the exhaust get routed...?

Most dual exhaust systems would probably cook those oil coolers...

I don't think their plans are to run the exhaust that far back!

True, exhaust needs to go somewhere else. I've got a single turbo and therefore a single side exhaust.

The oil coolers are in the middle of the car... Not far backward at all!

Those oil coolers are mounted just rear of the transmission cross-member... and forward of the differential.
The drive-shaft goes in between the oil coolers, and normally the exhaust would be right in the area of the coolers.

I can tell, you don't build tube-chassis/ frames... It's all good.

Well, that works out well.

Good job.
