Default Failing Torque Converter?

Drove the car and noticed that the TCC wasn't locking up, but everything else was good. Turned off car and started again same thing, went to down shift and car reved, but nothing. Lifted throttle and car started to pull normal again. Slowed to make a turn on to another road and the car kept trying to die like when you get too slow in a manual. Gave it gas it reved and found a gear.

Parked the car at home checked the fluids, little dirty but in range. Car lost all gears R D 1 2 3.
​​​​​​ Turned the car off restarted and it found drive to pull up on ramps.

Changed fluid, can see the pump is working. HP tuners is showing gears holding. Brought it back home and it lost everything again and then came back.

Thoughts?

It is possible that the TCC clutch disintegrated or a clutch pack in the trans and stopped up the filter. You did not say what was in the pan when you changed the fluid.

Just the typical accumulation on the magnet from clutches. No large pieces or anything else.
The car went back to normal after a fluid change for a day and then repeated the no gear at all. Turned it off, restarted and drove it back in the garage.

I assume the transmission that you are referring to is a 4L60E in an 01 F-Body. The 4L60E does not use electronics to control reverse and 3rd gear. With that being said and you car has no movement at all after awhile I would say that it is time for a rebuild.

Turns out torque converter failed. The clutches inside the converter have given up.
as for transmission, everything looks good inside, so nothing was spread through the unit.

Thank you for the update; total converter failures seem to be rare.
Even before reading Mr Bond's post, it sounded like the filter was getting intermittently clogged.

Newest update:
Accumulator piston cracked a few months later. New piston, clutches & seals after opening it up a second time.
$27 part can have some major impacts to the functionality of the overall unit.
After 16 years and 91K miles of nitrous abuse, it needed a complete change.
