Ive searched and searched and I can't find a clear answer. I've swapped from LT1 T-56 to LM7 4L60e. Totally green to auto transmission in general. I've got a GM 12558306 cable and it does not snap onto the lever provision, not even close. I talked to the guy I bought the linkage from and he said to get Dorman 14057 shift cable bushing. The clear Dorman bushing snaps onto the lever provision nicely. However, when I press the busing into the cable it pops right back out so that can't be right, I'm missing a key concept here. Has me thinking I'm supposed to remove the existing "bushing" I guess that's what it is. Before I ruin this cable I wanted to see what I can find out here with you geniuses. TIA
The shift lever has to match the cable. The oe shift lever has a 10mm ball that snaps in to lock it in. Fun part is that the part was discontinued.
so in my case where I switched to a th400 and wanted to keep a stock shifter I need the cable and the lever. I bought an aftermarket lever which is why it won’t work.

hopefully this saves someone some time!
Just in case someone else has this problem. You can cut off the stud in the bracket you can find at the parts store and drill it out and put this 10mm ball in:
