Default Transmission replacement

A couple of questions:
99trans am. Full exhaust, slp intake and a couple other bolt ons.

lost 3rd and 4th gear, or 2nd and 4th. Either way I’m looking to buying a rebuilt trans. It’s got 140k miles with a 3600stall converter on it.

should I replace the converter while it’s apart anyways? About 65k miles on it or just check for metal in the fluid/status of fluid and go from there?
I only have lift access for a couple of days.

New rear main seal is on the list when I dig into this project.
thanks to anyone with some input.

Are you considering buying a trans with 140K miles with a 3600 stall ? a rebuild with 140K miles on it.... 65K on the original trans ?
Either loosing 3/4 or 2nd and 4th indicates you may have broke the 2/4 band anchor out of the band and/or 3/4 clutch issue....easy fixes on your original trans. But with two days of lift time maybe not enough time for you to rebuild the original.... plus do the rear main seal. If I were you I would rebuild the original yourself and use the experts on here to help you thru the rebuild process of this forum. I am assuming with the issues mentioned its a 4L60E that came on 99 Trans am's…..start a thread on your 60E rebuild and get your tools from amazon per forum member direction ...use several pics during your rebuild...love pics. Love forums !!

Oh yea, on the TC....always replace them. Plenty of people out there that will sell you a converter.

If you know the manufacturer of the torque converter you can send it back to them to be cleaned/rebuilt. That would be much cheaper than buying another one.

When dealing with my own transmissions and torque converters I have reused them at times if there wasn’t a lot of debris in the pan and I knew it was working well before the trans died. It was a gamble that I was willing to take.

Various members have reported that they found nearby converter shops which would open, clean and reweld any converter for like $150. Since shipping each way can be $50 and the manufacturer will then charge $150, finding a local/nearby converter shop is often a good choice.
When the 3/4 cluch frictions wear out they can deposit a lot of material in the converter which a simple flush will not remove. Hence the open/clean/reweld suggestion.

My Bond and I have been know to repeatedly remove and rebuild a trans just for the fun of learning a bit more.
