Default 4L60E Swap Question

Hey guys,

New to the forum. Have searched extensively and haven't found an answer to a definite noob question. I'm quite familiar with LS engines and very familiar with mechanics and wrenching in general. I've built quite a few rides but this is my first LS swap. I'm curious if I buy an LM7 and it DOES NOT have a transmission attached, can I just buy a 4L60E off craigslist and bolt it up without doing any kind of retune? I plan on purchasing HP Tuners and doing as much as I can myself.

Thanks for the help.

Get a two wheel drive 4L60E and get one from the later years after GM fixed a lot of early problems. You might take a look at the link below about what you will need for a torque converter, flex plate, etc. Lotsa' good info below.

About the tune for it, it will depend on you getting the PCM with the donor engine. If not, it could easily have another transmission type in the operating system.

Awesome. Thanks alot. So just to confirm, if the motor i get is an LM7 that came from the factory with a 4L60E and I swap a different 4L60E in, it will not require a retune?

"Require" and "benefit from" are 2 very different concepts.

I'm not going to say that a tune is not required. Depending on the PCM you use, a tune change could absolutely be required.

Google: 4L60e model year differences. They all can be made to work but there are physical differences in the case, in the output shaft length, in the torque converters, mounting features, etc.

Just in the physical sense, C4 Corvette 4L60e are different than F-body 4L60es are different than C5 4L60e are different than 2wd truck 4L60es are different than truck 4wd 4L60es.. I'm sure theres some I'm forgetting. So you want to at least understand the differences there.
