Default 6L80/90e Output Planetary Removal

Hi all. Shot in the dark. Does anyone know how to remove the planetary set from the output shaft drum on a 6L80e or 6L90e? I got the first snap ring off, but can't for the life of me figure out how to empty the drum.

I need it empty for machine work on the output shaft.

Appreciate any feedback!

Justin

do you have the atsg?

usually you can pull the carrier right there since you have the snap ring out. its easier done upright with a couple J picks. sometime you have to take the front ring gear out as it rotates. from there you can take the carrier, then the second snap ring, the spacer, the rear ring gear. and theres another torrington back there thats sensitive to install direction.

Thanks! I'm not sure what the atsg is? It seems like it should just come out. Carrier and first ring gear. But she won't. Someone else told me to hold it by the output shaft and rotate it back and forth and it'll slide out. This one seems stubborn.

Got it! I swear I tried everything, then it basically just fell out haha. The trick for me was holding it up vertical by the output shaft and turning while holding the carrier still with my other hand. Came right out.

Now to figure out which parts I'm going to replace while its apart and send the output for machining!

I was going to say...

Um... something maybe worn/ hung-up if you can not separate the planetary components.

NOTE!!!

When you go through your transmission; be very cautious of 3-5-R and 1-2-3-4 Cracks/ leaks!

Air Check your Pistons and Drums as best as you can... there are often some leaks in this Unit, that you would not see in other model transmissions.

Ah! Yes! I have one that I downloaded for the 6L80e. I assumed they were similar enough to get me through this project as long as I paid attention to what I was doing.

Thanks for the advice! I plan to inspect each drum and all the friction/steels. Going to air test as much as I can. This trans is 79k from a 2012 GMC Savana CutAway. So it's in pretty decent shape so far. Engine is limited to 5400 rpm too so it's not been rung out too bad haha.

Going to replace the check *****, and some other recommended items in the valve body, along with anything that is worn. See how she goes.
