Default 4L80E center support w/.041 recess

When I pulled this 80E down to rebuild, it had some bad hard parts. I tried using like for like, based on the comp. of the parts. I had to replace the center support, so I bought one based on the year, sup 99 up. Mine had the .041 shim, sup. there was a recess on the CS to make up for it. The CS I got didn't have that, I think that's part of the problem with no clearance. So I order another, even questioning that, guy sent one, and the area that the book says is recessed, its flat across. Anyone have a picture of one with a recess, do they even exist, lol. I no longer have the orig, but at the time I thought I compared them.

Well I got my third CS, still no recess even after sending this link so they know what I am talking about. So I wonder if I can have the recess machined, but prob a hardened material, or as noted use a 97-98 sun shaft, and eliminate the .041 spacer. Shouldn't be this hard, lol. I have a couple extra cores, could just start over, but trying to save a little time and money-remember that one, lol.

If you look at the document that Maroon Monster was kind enough to provide...

Look at page 6 showing the bottom of the center support (marked letter A)...
This is where the difference is.

The shim that is used with these "Late" cores is shown at the bottom of page 6...
and gets installed under the torrington-bearing on page 8 (on top of the ring-gear).

I personally do not like this "Late" lube-system and personally fought against it being implemented.

I was out voted by my fellow engineers, whom felt that this system should be an improvement "on paper".

O well... I am just happy that I do not have to use it these days...
and something that makes me very happy is modifying the "late" lube-system into something more closely resembling the "old" lube-system.

Tell those fellow engineers they are buffoons for stealing AFL oil to use as lube oil
The manual valve was RIGHT THERE you could have easily taken directly from line and used that.

LOL! Not any more! At least the way pretty much everyone modifies these "late" cores!

As if the AFL circuit does not already have enough trouble LMAO!

A google search brought me to this thread to answer my question about 4L80e Center Support with the .041 recess as referenced in the ATSG Manual under changes made in the 99 and up model year. Like the thread starter I could not locate a CS with the recess machined in it. I came across further documentation that shows .041" recess never happened. https://www.transmissiondigest.com/w...et-are-you-on/ this document shows pages from what appears to be the 2008 Edition ATSG 4L80E Manual (I purchased this manual a month ago and it is the 2003 edition) and the simple way to determine what year your CS is, by measuring the overall height, 99- 4.170", 98-4.220".
I found a Transgo.ORG Document; 4L80E -97 and Later Models Lube Failure Prevention -Parts Change Reference, on page 6 it shows the Center Support washer surface to bearing surface dimensions for (97-98) .950" for (99) .900". Although this document still references the bogus .041" recess.
