For a given gear change there are 2-3 checkballs involved on a 4L80E. At that point you're looking a near complete hydraulic circuit. There are professional builders who don't understand the hydraulics, even on an elementary level. It could be broken down into individual checkballs and how they operate but those that genuinely want to learn the hydraulics will seek the charts and study themselves.

were can one find these charts or what are they called? I would like to get a deeper understanding of all the hydraulics involved in a transmission.

I had decided that I was not going to get into the details or discuss these circuits/ their function and corresponding circuits in any greater detail.
I feel that the more simple explanation and diagrams will reach more people and relate to more people.

The title alone is boring enough to keep most people away...
I don't want to lose more people by going over their heads, when a simple explanation can get 70% of the job done.

Should the forum members decide that they wish to be further educated, then we can discuss:

-Pressure vs Volume
-Surface area
-Valve-Land size and placement
-Spring force (alone or in combination with fluid force)
-Orificing into/ out of these circuits
-Circuit bias
-Etc

did you ever get deeper into all of this It sounds interesting and that it will provide a greater understanding of how these circuits work and thank you for taking the time to share these very educational posts with us

I have the PDF version of the official GM service manual for these transmissions, but I can't link it on here because it's slightly over the data limit.
If you give me an email to send it to, I can give you a badass manual with all of the hydraulic circuits.

However, if you do a search for "GM 4l60E service manual", there are numerous other sites that have it available for download. Probably faster that way.

is it the one that you were saying was too big to link on here or is that a different manual?

Yes, it was just over the MB limit. Which is funny, because I downloaded it from this site a few years ago.
