Default What trans should I use? Converter?

I've been researching like crazy and am more confused now that when i started.
Project: 2001 mustang 3200lb. Plan on a 5.3 600-700hp street strip build, Looking for a modern lockup overdrive Trans (4L80E?)
Not technical enough to rebuild one myself.
Also looking for reputable Companies to buy one from if that's the suggested course.

Where are you located?
You're on LS1 tech so I'm guessing there is a chance this mustang is LS Powered?
If not...what is powering it?

A 5.3L making 600 - 700 HP would be perfectly fine with a 4L80E (and give you room to grow in power down the road).

If you are in FL... FTI Performance is in Deland, FL.

Yes the mustang already has the LS swap K-member. Looking for the motor now.
Thanks guys, When yo say a 4L80E would be perfectly fine are you talking about a stock rebuild w a custom converter, or a performance built racing trans?
Also I downloaded FTI's catalog and didn't see any E trans in there, the only overdrive trans was a 700r4 so I guess ill give them a call.

A mostly stock, rebuilt 4L80E with a few minor upgrades would be fine for almost 1,000 HP at the crankshaft.
These are very robust when completely stock... but do need some small changes made for your expected power level.

You also need a Torque-Converter that is in the $700 - $1,000 minimum.
Cheaper torque-converters perform terribly in comparison.

FLT, RPM and Performabuilt will all sell you a nice unit off the shelf. Converter will depend on your cam choice.

We only build Powerglides, TH400s, and 700R4 transmissions. Converters however we cover a much broader spectrum, including 4L80E converters. I'm happy to help you pick one out if you would like to shoot me a PM or email.
