Help 4L80e experts - grinding noise - did i do something wrong
The trans seems to work fine. BUT if I put it in D3 and then shift it back into D4, it makes an awful grind sound. Almost like the sound if you run the starter motor on an already running engine. The only way to get it back into D4 is to turn it off.
What can cause that noise? What could I have done wrong? Or was this trans likely screwed before I touched it? What area should I look for a problem?
thanks!
NOTE: I've been corrected that the 4L80E does NOT have a valve-body bolt length issue. See below.

unlike the 4L60E, where it is an issue.
Start by following TruckDougs recommendation... that is a fine place to start to look.
The starter motor will eventually over-heat, start smoking, and seize (sometimes catch fire too).
Next time you go to start the vehicle, the starter motor will not move; and you will now know what the noise was...
as you will find a cooked starter motor. LOL!

When I design and build my custom Power-Distribution Systems for my customers (and my own vehicles) the starter motor will have a "Mega-Fuse" for the Cable to the Battery , and a "Maxi-Fuse" for the wire to the actuator.
I actually use "Mega-Fuses" for anything "High Amperage"... a 250A Alternator will receive a 300A "Mega-Fuse" in my Sealed PDM.
