Default Gear selector question (auto trans)

Maybe it's just me but the gear selector indicator is not very clear or easy to see. Should there be a light in there when the headlights are not on? I find my self looking at the gears and trying to see if I am in drive or 3. Just seems like the indicator should be more clear or brighter.

Thanks
Joe

There is a light underneath when the parking or driving lights are on. It's not ultra bright but it's definitely there to see the gears in the dark. The red indicator shows up rather well IMO but maybe yours is faded or hard to see?? Here are two photos I just took for you in Park and in Drive. As you can see the red indicator shows the gear clearly.

Well that looks much better. I wonder if mine still has a plastic cover over the display. I will take it apart to see what is going on. Yours looks like what I would expect. Thank you for the pic. FYI, I see you are in NC. I lived in Asheville for a few years in 94 before coming to Wi.

Thanks again,
Joe

Glad to assist.
Asheville has changed dramatically since the 90's. Almost like an island by itself in western NC.

Actually, It was a little strange when I was there. Some things reminded me of the hippies back in the 60's . Back to the problem. I took it apart and could see nothing wrong. I did notice when I pressed on the selector the red got closer to the indicator and was brighter. I am thinking something is not lined up correctly. When I took it apart one of the screws from the selector fell down by the linkage. Took a half hour to find it and pull it out with a magnet. (Never Fails the easy stuff can be a pain). I will take it apart again in a couple days and see if there is something missing or broken or if it is as it is. I have attached a couple pictures. You will notice the red seems farther back than yours.

It does seem a bit different. Why is everything so difficult when it should be so easy? Good luck with it.
