Default To Peen or Not to Peen... that is the question.

I have read that the Vorlon ***** take a long time to seat properly. Is that on any plate, TransGo plates, or just new plates from GM or TransGo?
Did I word that correctly? To increase seating better you peen the plate using a steel ball. Do you do this on used plates too, or just new plates?

Thanks!

P.S. Can anybody explain what's what with the "Round hole, Square hole... Square hole, Square hole?" I have a 2007 core and I bought a GM bonded plate on Amazon for like $6.22 to see the differences and there was very little--the bonded I believe had 2 stacked holes shaped like USB ports near the bottom and 3 spots had a filter mesh built in. Near the top the '07 plate had a round hole 1/4 - 5/16" diameter; the bonded plate had a rectangular hole there. I recall Precision nearly always mentioned which it had on their teardowns. What's the significance? I know many don't like flat "filters" and prefer the deep 3-dimensional ones, but I think maybe the flat ones can be cut out and replaced, no?

Thanks again!

Use a new plate, and peen it with a steel ball - lightly - regardless of ball used.

Three dimensional filters are always better. Cut the plate at your own risk.

Like dixiebandit69 said, you mostly need to peen a new plate that has sharp edges around the check ball holes. Most plates that have been used have been worn smooth already, so no need to peen here.

Thanks, I guess I lucked out with a low mileage core that didn't need rebuilding but I wouldn't have known it without tearing it apart and modifying it. At one point I even thought the seller may have sabotaged it when I broke a 1/2" drive Torx Plus bit and had to drill out 3 bellhousing bolts that didn't budge with an impact--I thought maybe the seller didn't want me to find something inside and used an even bigger impact than mine on the bolts to buy him some time as he was moving!

I drilled both the original as well as the bonded plate but will probably go with the original. I was surprised to find a couple bigger than what I was gonna drill them to, from the factory.

Thanks guys.

Put a little heat on the case around those Tors Plus bolts and they will come right out. I use regular bolts and washers in place of the Tors Plus bolts on my personal transmissions.
