Default 4L65E went boom!

2005 GTO, built N/A 416ci LS3 650+ crank hp, SS3600 w/anti ballooning plate, "built" transmission, 1pc carbon fiber DS sticky Direzza ZII Star Spec tires.

Found some really sticky new blacktop and did a dig: it actually held full throttle in 1st! Just before the 1-2 shift I heard a very loud BANG! from under my car (sounded middle to rear of car). Instant rev limiter with mostly lack of acceleration. Car was able to drive 25mph the 3 blocks home. Trans was just barely gripping, as if crank shaft was tied to driveshaft with a slinky. Was NOT like when you destroy your bands or wear them out and any decent pressure makes them slip: more like a hydraulic ram with a bad seal. No leaks or parts on ground. What happened???

Thinking is either converter blew up or those gears in the end of the transmission blew up (forgot what all them are called). I've killed at least a dozen auto trans in my life and been around at least a dozen more during there deaths but never have I heard a auto make the same BANG! sound as that. Sounded like when a friend blew his flywheel during a nasty 5k rpm clutch dump.

Wonder how much money I would have saved if I had learned how to rebuild transmissions when I was younger?...

I would also check the diff. I suspect the diff broke and then broke the low roller clutch in the trans.

The cost of you purchasing your own Parts at Retail pricing, plus you assembling the Transmission...
Will cost near the same, as if you just purchased the Transmission complete.
