I haven't torn one down since I left the dealership, but I used our Kent Moore holding fixture and a work bench with a large shallow metal pan to catch any fluid from the parts sitting on the table. If I was to build one, I would make sure it was at a comfortable height.

I met a bunch of Guys from ProLine Modular Work-Benches at a SEMA Show... about 4 or so Years ago.

I personally need a ton of work-space that I can use to keep EVERYTHING neat and organized.
ProLine Modular had a multitude of Work-Bench designs...
Most of which could be joined to another Work-Bench, or customized via an absurd amount of accessories and options.

I had those Guys come through the Shop and plan a Build-Out for the different Rooms/ Areas of the Shop.
The Tear-Down Benches have Gutters around 3-Sides... and 2 Tables are joined with a Parts Cleaning Sink in between them.
Similar to this:

What was really great, were the endless amount of options for the Clean-Rooms, and Assembly Benches:

i dont use a table. blasphemy right? clunking parts around on stainless steel benches does not spark joy for me. i make these adapters for engine stands and you just put an engine stand oil tray underneath. much less mess to deal with IME

I have some more at paint now, hopefully ready for sale in a week. There are also similar items on ebay for ~100 bucks now

I always ALWAYS tear down on a stand like truckdoug
But, all the parts have to go somewhere...that's where a table is needed.
Butcher shops that go out of business usually have high quality, sturdy, all stainless tables...for cheap.
Most even have a "drip rail" for the blood that works great for transmission fluid to drain into a bucket

Vortec i like tht setup but I'm a cheap guy and tht seems way out of budget for me. Awesome setup tho!

Maroon and truckdoug i have always used a fixture tool off the bench and drained in a bucket. I do like the slaughter house table. Thts what i was mainly looking for. Something stainless with a rear drain. I'll look around for one of those. Thanks.

Walmart has a nice Hart work table, roughly the size of a card table. They run $70 or so. A couple of those might work. Hart is made by the same company that makes Ryobi.

I run a fixture on an engine stand with a pan under the fixture from Summit Racing. Then all my parts go on my benches

I started my trans on a WEN 500lb capacity cart and a cut off end of a plastic 55-gal drum, about 3" tall; I drilled drain holes in the corners of the top & bottom shelves, but you can skip the bottom holes to capture any fluid. The drum end raised the trans up out of any fluid, and the trans maneuvers easily on the plastic drum end and the end easily rotates if needed. I put all the parts on the bottom shelf. The cart was the bigger of 2 sizes, I think around 36" x 24". It was as low as $104 last year on Amazon.
