Default Stall in stock 4L60e

A buddy of mine recently got a LS1 Camaro. It was Fbody stock when we got it meaning it had a lid and a cat-back. We threw some headers and a cat-less Y-pipe on it and an SSRA and some rear lower control arms and relocation brackets. He's really wanting a stall, but I've always read that an aftermarket stall will eventually kill a stock trans. Not immediately, just eventually. How true is this? Mainly looking at a Yank SS3200 because the STR is closer to a stock converter. He already has a trans cooler that I had laying around plumbed, so we're not too worried about heat. Any input is appreciated.

Not sure why a converter would "kill" a stock trans, unless it's contaminated with debris from a previously-gone-bad transmission.

Heat would be a concern and harmful over time, but can be controlled with an aftermarket cooler and reprogrammed fan settings (or an additional fan, if need be).

I think driving style and condition of the trans (prior to installing the converter) are the real factors of consideration in terms of trans life, not so much the converter itself.

I think what killed those stock transmissions was guys throwing in the high-stall converter behind an engine with modifications, then running the snot out of it.

A stock transmission, with all the leak points it's got, will eventually give way. Nothing lasts forever.

A high stall converter isn't going to kill a transmission that wasn't already on death-row to begin with.

My A4 car has 195k on it and the transmission still works perfectly. First hi-stall converter went in at 43k. Enough said.

Dana at Pro-built Automatics (PBA on this board) told me that the one thing that kills these trannies more than anything else is the super heavy high inertia stock converters. More to ponder.

Put a good cooler on that tranny with your hi-stall converter and it will last nearly forever. Finito.
