Multi disk converters.. Trying to sort the functions.
So I'm working out what kind of build I want in a LS swapped jeep wrangler, so I'm fairly light, about 3600 lbs.
I'm looking for some experience with using a multi disk converter in a low speed high torque situation..
I'm doing a 4l65E (YES I know
but the 4l80 is heavier and too long for my setup without way way to radical of mods. )
It behind a stock reman L33 (The all aluminum motor,, ) So in theory I'm at about 300-320 HP..
What I'm trying to decide is how big I should/can I go on converter, Stock-ish billet, triple disk, 5 disk?
My setup is a Holley Terminator X-max with a Lokar sport shift that can act like a regular floor shift (PRNOD21)
it tilts to the right and gives me tap-shift control which works good with the current trans.
What I was considering is how do the heavier billet torque converters act in a manual mode situation.
Can I run it like its an imitation of a dual clutch transmission? IE if I was locking in to first gear climbing over
something and locked the converter am I playing with radical failure? What circumstances would kill one?
This rig gets used to travel to the places I like to play, so I'm trying to find a balance between a
lightly aggressive daily driver and a trail rig. My current trans smoked the 3-4 clutch do to a totally
bonehead move on my part so while I have it out, I'm considering whether there is an advantage/disadvantage to being more
aggressive with converter lockup.
My pre-conceived notions are,,
1. Should run cooler when just cruising with no slip.
2. The terminator lets me manage shift points and TC lockup fairly well.
3. On obstacles with some momentum going on, the throttle response to the wheels "should" be quicker??
4. Should run generally cooler because I can lock up at lower RPM and unlock on throttle position.
Thanks for any ideas!
