P1810 Code Hard to Find the Problem

I received your PM but I can't really help you with the problem as I have no experience with P1810 nor it being associated with the problems you're experiencing. It's also possible that you have more than one issue happening here, as someone suggested above. With that said, I can offer some insight here:
Yes, 1998 models will show commanded/current gear in real time on a scanner. The data is there, I can see it with my ancient AutoTap software on my equally ancient IBM laptop. I've had this software for well over 20 years, it was prime equipment back then and still works just fine today. So the data is there, but you probably need something more comprehensive than what you currently have to retrieve it.

There are NO internal fluid pressure sensors inside a 4L60/65/70. You can only read shifter position (through the TFP switch), temperature and vehicle speed. In 2005+ you can also read input shaft RPM.
While the scanner will show the commanded gear, the actual gear cannot be read, it can only be deduced from RPM and Speed.
Some scanners "claim" to show internal pressure, but it's actually just a deduction based on the commanded EPC current and how a brand new stock trans would respond to that. You have to install an external pressure gauge to get the actual pressure.

All 3 of my scanners show shift and TCC solenoid command, input/output speed, fluid temp, converter clutch slip, TFP Switch, EPC command and will let me command solenoids on/off with the scanner among other things.

This is not '98 specific. I can see commanded gear using my AutoTap software in any year F-body PCM (it was visible in my '98, '99, '00 and '02 cars).
AutoTap is ancient stuff. I'm sure there is something newer that would also access this data.

My AutoTap version is from over 20 years ago, so I can't speak for certain on the newer versions (honestly, I didn't even know it was still being updated and offered), but with mine I only have the ability to view/log data (read only - no write/re-tune).
In the old days, I used to use this program to read data and then use LS1 Edit to tune. But that was the only option at the time. These days, if you want to also be able to make changes then I'd look for a complete tuning suite (with read/scan capabilities as well).

I recently got a cheap OBD Bluetooth dongle and I’ve been using a free app but the app I’ve been using doesn’t show transmission stuff either. I have an iPhone and it looks like there aren’t as many apps as there are for an android. But if you have an Android I think the Torque app might show transmission stuff.

Took it to Tmission shop, they changed the switch a second time. Code persists. they called in a Mobile High Tech company for diagnostics. They said the PCM and wiring are good. They think there is pressure pump inside the tranny is bad, or something like that. have to go back and read what they wrote. The shop says they would need to drop the tranny. with thousands in costs. I think that's their way of saying: sorry, have a good day.

Found out something interesting today
If the car surges on a start, it will keep surging for the rest of that run. If stop, turn off the engine and start again it will not surge again for the rest of that run.
It makes me believe it's not a mechanical problem, rather a software/PCM.
Also I do not think P1810 is related to surging at all. If it's TCC cycling that would not set P1810 code.

At least that's what it looks like. I bought a hptuner and made those changes I posted on post #35. Past 7 days, no surging. Previously I had surging everyday.
Hopefully this will help someone down the road. The guy in that link was right, everybody is overthinking this. But again,. not everybody knows about the transmission programming. I am sure the two shops I took it to wont do anything like that. Both cited over $3000 repairs.
At least that's what it looks like. I bought a hptuner and made those changes I posted on post #35. Past 7 days, no surging. Previously I had surging everyday.
