GM246 Transfer case upgraydd
Disassembling the case, the rear magnesium case half is PRISTINE, beautiful. Zero debris on pump pickup filter. Magnet is clean.
Rear case pump locating spring clip is intact, shows NO wear and ZERO contact wear from pump thrust face.
the question is :
SHOULD I rip out the fragile spring clip, and install steel "case saver" in an other wise perfect case half... or just replace the input spline shaft, new seals, orings and glue it back together as is ?.
.
simply restated: Should I install Case-Saver or NOT ?
.
.
. Second question, on the subject : Is there much difference between the BLUE Auto-Trak fluid and DexronVI ?
Definitely drained OUT clean Red ATF from this case.
I'd change the shift fork pads too.
YES to the case saver
I've always had good luck with Dex VI
I'd add a new magnet to your list as well as replace both the drain and fill plugs with magnetic versions.
And use the RTV sparingly...it doesn't take much. Any excess usually just ends up in the darn pickup screen and then slows oil flow

I put brass plugs in because the aluminum ones suck (had to fight one out night before last!) but magnetic ones sound like a good idea.
Problematic Joints that will not seal well (especially between different Metals or poorly machined Parts).
It Seals up Leaks amazingly!
It's pretty bad at removal/ clean-up on rebuilding.

I agree. It’s hard to get it off! But I get loads of it for free. The techs give me all I ask for. So I use it ALOT.
