4l80e swapped stepside Silverado
There are 2 basic 2wd style output shafts. Both styles have 91-96 with no lube hole & 97-up with a lube hole. The sleeve has nothing to do with damaging the transmission other than the leak you may build into it.
1) The slip yoke that requires a sleeve Item "C". It has full splines down to the 1/4" wide sleeve press on area. It can still have threads and thus the confusion. The sleeve has it's oring and the slip yoke is actually longer and has no undercut for an oring
2) The bolt on yoke, item "D" that had short splines with an oring on the shaft. The slip yoke is shorter & undercut for the oring.
If these are improperly matched, say with a slip yoke shaft & a bolt on yoke it will pull the slip into the seal as you tighten up the bolt. The yoke will damage the seal and cause a leak.
