Default 700r4 rebuild question

I am currently rebuilding an 85 model 700r4. Upon case assembly I measured total endplay at the input shaft and found about 80 thousandths. I know the maximum spec is 035, my question is that is my tolerance too large to fix with shims? I have verified correct stack-up and believe all components to be compatible. The trans originally had a Sonnax sunshell with the torrington bearing and shortened low roller clutch race. This is my first time into a 700r4/4l60 so I did not recognize this. The low-roller was destroyed so I purchased a stock one; upon assembly I realized the stack up was too tall to install the output shaft. Since I already had the stock roller clutch I purchased a factory sunshell with the plastic thrust washer. It is only a driver with a bone stock 305 anyways. I have ordered a shim kit but the 80 thousandths of endplay worries me so I just want to be sure before shimming it. Thanks

Did you install new torrington bearings?

Which selective washer did you use?

.080" is a lot; it sounds like something is very worn, or there is a parts mismatch.

I did not install new bearings as the transmission was very recently rebuilt by somebody else. The only reason I’m into it right now is due to the low roller clutch failure. Everything else in the transmission has looked pretty good.

I didn’t have any to choose from but the washer atop the input drum upon has the number 89 stamped on it. I went ahead and disassembled the case again and reassembled it with my old broken parts to get a reading since I did not measure endplay before teardown. It measured 60 thou.

Little concerned you have an 89 washer and still have that much clearance. Sure you are not missreading and it is a 69 washer very common?

I’m unsure if this is a #68 or #89; as you can tell it has significant scoring. The input drum itself does not appear to me to be significantly damaged. The bearing does still roll very smoothly.

That's a 68 washer and is common in my area but it's trash and looks like the drum is too. You can see the metal transfer in the cup plug area.

The selective washer is from 67-72, here's the wittrans web page link. https://www.wittrans.com/New_link_pa...input&part=230

I replace every 700R4 drum with a 4L60E input drum because then I can use the steel pistons and eliminate any aluminum forward piston from cracking.
