I bought this trans am and it supposedly had a shift knit and would always rough shift into second causing wheels to break traction. I gave it petal to the floor from a left turn and it felt like shifting slipped and it started revving to the moon and banging redline and my friend behind me said pure carbon smoke came from my exhaust. On my way home it felt like I didn’t have first gear and it wouldn’t shift until 4k rpms than later it would only shift if I gave it gas up to 3.5k or more rpms and than let off the gas. I parks it and went to take it out to see if it was still screwed up and it doesn’t have reverse. Any tips on what it could be and how hard it would be to fix.
i am betting it is actually 2nd 4th and rev you dont have , Stripped or broken sun shell
so should I just drop the tranny and inspect the sun shell? Is there anything else I should look at? Also isn’t first gear shared with reverse. I think it’s first that’s gone because when I drove home it didn’t have any of the torque that felt like first and it drove like it was staring in second.

If you do a tear-down, you may as well inspect everything. Transmissions are not like engines. 90% of all transmission repair requires removal. Nobody wants to do a repair only to find the next part that fails in 2-6 months.
Now I am assuming it's a 4L60E because the original post did not specify...
Manual 1st uses the low side of the L/R (the one in the case) clutch, the low one way clutch to hold the rear planet and the FWD clutch.
OD or D 1st uses the low one way clutch & the FWD clutch.
Reverse uses the reverse side of the L/R clutch and the reverse input clutch for reverse.
