Help with Direct Clutch Return Springs 4l80e.
Hello everybody,
I need some help or opinions, I am rebuilding a transmission for the first time and am reading as much as possible and watching YouTube about rebuilding the 4l80e.
The transmission is going behind a 383 with 460 Hp and about 473 ft. lbs. Torque
Now I'm at the direct clutch and was to replace the springs with TH400 springs but when I went to install the springs they do not snap in the lower spring cage as the originals, the TH400 have a larger diameter.
I asked around and got answers to go with TH400 Piston or to stay with stock springs. Someone also told me just install them in the original cage they don't need to snap into place they will stay secure like that....
I see that jakes has a complete set (Lower cage and upper lid and HD springs) for this but they don't ship to Europe so no go there, I have been ordering almost all my parts thru rockauto as they are cheap and very good with shipping but I can't find any solutions there.
Summit sells the FTI HD TH400 springs but shipping cost is $65 for a bag of springs
And I'm afraid they too are going to be too big in diameter.
Anybody that can shim in here or has another option ?

The Transgo HD2 kit has drop-in springs that fit the retainer nicely
Seems silly to buy a whole kit just for the springs tho
You could peen the seats on the retainer to fit the 400 springs
They Really do not need to snap in to function properly
The snapping in is much more a feature for ease of assembly vs necessary for service.
Even if they don't snap in, the springs will be captured from moving around too much by those seats and they will work just fine
Most spring pockets in aluminum pistons allow for the same amount of free movement and it's never a big deal

Thanks for the info, I was looking at the transgo kit but is silly just to get the springs and not needing the rest of the kit. I'll put the TH400 springs in the 4l80e cage and install it like that.
