i have a 99 trans am shifter mounted in my car. no console or anything, just the shifter. on connected to the shifter is a lil arm, and that arm goes to a black oval shaped thing. and it has an inlet in it that looks like something is supposed to go in there. i will try and get a pic in a couple of hours, i just dont know what the heck it is lol

Neutral safety switch mounts on the passenger side, a tab stick in to it and slides around through the gears points. The shifter should have a solenoid (black oval shaped thing) that is electrically activated to lock out all the gears, until the brake pedal is applied. Then you can go from Park to any gear selection. Is that the thing you are talking about?
