how do you shift a reverse manual th400

how do you shift a reverse manual th400 with the th400, do you downshift while slowing down to a stop light like an m6 trans? or what about cruzin at 30mph and want to mash on it do you downshift from say 2nd into first?

the reverse you will start with the shifter forward toward the front of the car that will be park then down 1 is reverse then neu. then 1st,2nd, & 3rd fun to drive i love mine

I usually leave it in third when I coast down otherwise since it has no engine braking the intermediate sprag can burn up due to lack of lube if shifted into first at a high speed and coasted down.
When I drive and get on it I usually drop it into first for a second to get the rpm's up (like around 7500) and then hit second.
I wasted 2 TCI full comp reverse TH-400 trannys. I used to shift to second to freewheel to the light, and then to 1st after I stopped. If it turned green before I got there and I forgot to shift back to 3rd, I would hit the gas and it was like neutral dropping the trans. I sheared the case lugs off twice before I figured out why it was happening. 
Other than that, I loved the reverse pattern!
